How to Install your Range Extender?

There are two ways to use your Linksys extender:

  1. Linksys wireless range extender or
  2. Linksys wired range extender (access point).

NOTE– Wireless range extenders repeat existing WiFi signals. 

Wired range extenders (access points) create new WiFi hotspots once connected to a router or access point with an associate Ethernet cable. 

Make sure in both the scenarios you need a router with a working Internet connection.

Before beginning setup, decide whether you wish to use as a wireless range extender or as a wired range extender (access point). 

Following Instructions, you need to follow while setting up a range extender.

  • Putting in place as a wireless range extender WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) 
  • Will your router has a WPS button? WPS is easy thanks to connecting WiFi devices with Push-button connect. 
  • Routers that support WPS have a button on the front or back side of your router, as they write it on it.

  • If you didn’t recognize the WPS button on your router, or if you are not sure, just continue with the browser-based setup by typing “extender.linksys.com”.

NOTE- The WPS button will not work if you have disabled WPS on your router, or if you have got chosen WEP as your network security kind. In either case, continue with the browser-based setup.

  1. Plug the range extender into a power outlet nearby to your router. You’ll be able to move the range extender to a perfect location later following.
  2. Once the range extender is on, the indicator Power LED on the front will blink green for up to the minute.
  3. Wait for the indicator LED on the front of your range extender to blink amber that can take up to a minute.
  4. Extend your 2.4 GHz wireless network, press and hold the WPS button on your router for 5 seconds.

OTHER STEPS:

STEPS:

  4. Solid green which means ready to use.
  5. If it shows you solid amber Weak connection to the router. Change the power outlet closer to your router.
  6. Blinking amber Not connected to the router. Change the power outlet closer to your router. 
  7. Connect your wireless devices to your new extended network which you just created and “http://extender.linksys.com”. 
  8. If you have established your range extender with a Linksys Max-Stream Router, you don’t have to do anything. 
  9. Max-Stream routers support seamless roaming, and your extended WiFi network shares the same network name and password. 
  10. Connected devices will select the main or extended network as per the signal strength in that area. 
  11. If you do not have a router with seamless roaming, select the extended network on your device’s WiFi manager. 
  12. It shows extended networks as “_Ext” added to the end of your main network name. Passwords will be equivalent to those for your main network.

Browser-based setup

Use this setup method if you don’t have a WPS button on your router, or if you don’t want to use WPS to set up your connection. 

  1. Plugin the range extender midway between your router and dead zone. Using your mobile device or laptop, be sure you have at least two bars (around 50%) of your router’s WiFi signal at that location. 
  2. If you don’t have two bars, change the location of your range extender closer to the router. You can move the range extender to the location later using the setup software.
  3. Wait for the indicator LED on your range extender to blink amber. This can take up to a minute.
Browser-based setup
  1. Connect to the range extender setup network. On a computer, phone or tablet, connect to the WiFi network: Linksys Extender Setup – XXX. (XXX is the last three digits of your range extender’s MAC address.)
  2. Launch setup. Enter http://extender.linksys.com (or try http://192.168.1.1) in a browser to complete the setup. 

Follow the on-screen instructions: 

  • Welcome Screen.
  • Secure your range extender.
  • Range extender or access point? 
  • Choose a network to extend.
  • Enter the password for the main network.
  • Your extended wireless network.

Connect your WiFi devices to the extended network you just created. If you have established your range extender with a Linksys Max-Stream router, you don’t have to do anything.

Max-Stream routers support seamless roaming, and your extended WiFi network shares the same network name and password.

Connected devices will select the main or extended network as per signal Strength.

How to change the Extended wireless settings for your Linksys range extender?

The Extended Wireless Settings of the Linksys WiFi Range Extender is the wireless link between the range extender and the wireless clients.

This is the network name that the device detects and through which you can connect to. You will see the options that enable you to configure the wireless settings for your extended network.

  • Open a web browser and enter http://extender.linksys.com at the top of the Address bar and hit [ENTER].
  • Enter your login password and click on Login.
    NOTE: Use the Password that, you set upon setup. If you did not change it, you can use the default Password is admin.
  • Go to the Basic Setting, select the Extended Wireless Settings of the band you want to change. Then, uncheck the checkbox beside the Make same as router settings to disable it.
    RECOMMENDATION: By default, the checkbox is checked, and it hides the fields.
  • If you wish to change the Extended Wireless Advanced settings like the Channel Width, Security Mode and SSID Broadcast settings, do so in these fields.
    NOTE: If this option is left on Auto, the Linksys extender will follow the settings of the main router or access point.
  • If you also want to change the Extended Wireless Settings of your 5 GHz network, the same rule applies. Scroll to the 5 GHz Extended Wireless Settings section then repeat it.
    NOTE: make certain that your router is broadcasting each 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. If your router’s 5 GHz band is disabled or doesn’t have this feature, the 5 GHz settings on your range extender will gray out.
  • Click Save.

You should now have with success changed the Extended Wireless Settings of your vary extender.

Also, you can now connect your desired wireless clients to the new network name.

How to upgrade the firmware of Linksys range extender?

The Linksys extender will automatically detect if there is a new available firmware and update itself.

But, you can also log in and go to the Firmware upgrade page which will force a firmware checkup.

If there is a new version available, it will display the new firmware version number. Click the Update now button to start the upgrade process. 

IMPORTANT: Wait for the upgrade to finish. DO NOT power cycle the Linksys while performing the upgrade.

NOTE: If you would like for future firmware files to automatically update, select the

Auto-update checkbox.

Manual update

IMPORTANT: Before you go ahead with manually upgrading the Linksys range extender computer code, guarantee to 1st transfer the most recent computer code file from the Linksys support website.

  • To manually update the firmware, after login “extender.linksys.com” and click Select a file and select the firmware file that you have downloaded, then click Open.  
  • Click Save.
  • Further, you click on the begin upgrade and look ahead to the upgrade to complete. DO NOT power cycle the Linksys while performing the upgrade.
  • You should now have successfully updated your Linksys range extender firmware.

How to reset your Linksys WiFi range extender?

Resetting the Linksys range extender will restore it to its factory default settings. 

You will need to do this if you meet either of the following scenarios:

  • After that, you are experiencing intermittent connections while using the range extender.
  • You are manually installing the range extender after an unsuccessful try at using the setup software.
  • If you cannot access the web-based setup page of the vary extender.
  • The range extender’s light is not solid or blinking after doing a power cycle.

RECOMMENDATION: Before resetting the vary extender, “extender.linksys.com”. 

You’ll be able to produce a backup of the device’s configuration settings and restore them while not longing all the configuration method once more.

Access the web-based setup page of the range extender.

Launch a web browser and access the web-based setup page of your Linksys range extender “http://extender.linksys.com”.

Under the Administration select Factory Defaults.

Click the Restore Factory Defaults button.

To finish the method, undo the vary extender from the ability outlet and leave it OFF for 30 seconds. Plug the device back in.

RECOMMENDATION:  If you have created a configuration backup before resetting your expander to Factory default settings, click the Restore Configurations button under the Management sub-tab then click save settings.
